On June 6 NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced that the league will be forming an expansion committee after the league finalizes it's media rights deals, a step that is considered imminent. While the committee formation does not immediately result in teams being granted it is an important beginning step in the process. "We're looking forward to it." the commissioner said of the expansion process.
The next day ESPN's Michelle Steele Reported that "the NHL Kraken home arena is NBA ready - and Kraken co-owner Samantha Holloway “will pursue an (NBA) team when the time is right.”
In addition to expansion, Commissioner Silver spent a good deal of time talking about the significant role streaming platforms and technology investments will play in the league's future. These comments highlighted that Seattle is not only the potential recipient of an NBA expansion franchise, but also appears poised to become an epicenter of the NBA's global media & technology operations if, as reported, Amazon replaces Atlanta based TNT as one of the league’s major media partners.
Do not underestimate what a big deal the NBA's potential partnership with Amazon may become. The NBA will be coming to town & the impact of its presence in our city could be as significant as the the team itself.
Thanks to Sonics legends Gary Payton, Fred Brown, Jack Sikma, Kevin Calabro and all the great fans that gathered to support the Sonics Legends Fund at Moss Bay Hall on June 6. The SLF and partners including the Hall Group, Simply Seattle and many others continue to give back to our heroes in their time of need.
This is the right time to be talking about how we can maximize the positive impact of the NBA's return to Seattle.
It has never been more important to bring our community together, creating JOY and HOPE for our youth.
