Creating the Logo

Seattle NBA Fans recently unveiled their new logo, created by local graphic artist and cartoonist Rafael Calonzo. Calonzo is no stranger to the Seattle sports scene, having created the original Save Our Sonics & Storm logo in 2006 and the ArenaSolution.org logo in 2010.

The focus of the new logo is Squatch, the beloved mascot of the Seattle SuperSonics. Members of Seattle NBA Fans wanted the logo to be fun and celebratory, and Squatch fit the bill perfectly. As SNF Co-Founder Kenjo Onozawa, who operates @SeattleSonics on Twitter, said, “Mascots are inherently of the fan. Their purpose is to be fun and interactive for the people who love the team”.

The process of finalizing the logo involved two member surveys and multiple meetings. During this process, a debate arose between a “dunking Squatch” image and a “striding Squatch” image. While many members initially preferred the dunking variation, over time the “striding Squatch” emerged as the favorite. The image conveys the Pacific Northwest’s ongoing search for a mythical figure, and the return of the Sonics would feel like finding out that the Sasquatch is real.

In addition to the main logo, an alternative logo was created, featuring a Sonics uniform and more cartoonish detail. This logo can be used interchangeably and establishes Squatch as a character who may appear in future promotions or events. Special thanks go to Sub Pop Records, who designed the “Brand Edition” logo, honoring their iconic brand. This “SEA>FAN” logo reflects the pride in Seattle’s history and the special relationship that exists between sports and music in the region.

The new logo has been incredibly well received, and Seattle NBA Fans are looking forward to seeing their brand in action as they build out their website and other materials. And who knows, maybe “Dunking Squatch” will make a comeback in the future.
